US satirical news website the Onion has become the latest victim of social-media-hacking by the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) following similar recent attacks on the Guardian and BBC.
The hacker group claimed responsibility for several Twitter posts and released a screenshot, below, of their handy work. One post read: “UN’s Ban Ki Moon condemns Syria for being struck by Israel: ‘it was in the way of Jewish missiles’”, while many other posts made reference to the conflict between Syria and Israel.
The group are said to have had access to the @theonion, @OnionSports, @onionpolitics, @onionstroe and @TheAVClub Twitter feeds. The tweets have since been removed.
The Onion responded with a satirical article, claiming they changed the company’s passwords to “OnionMan77″ with “no spaces, and the O and M are both capitalised – both tactics that I think will keep us safe for the foreseeable future”.
On April 28, the hacker group gained access to a number of the Guardian’s Twitter accounts. The SEA also took over the BBC Weather’s Twitter feed in March.
